Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services right in River Oaks, Texas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you seek, our specialty is hair testing, and we've established testing facilities across all cities Nationwide to serve you. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair growth on the head or other body hair suffices. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific requirements.

The trend in drug testing methods has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle drug tests over recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair drug tests over the standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests benefit zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probation cases with a longer detection period up to 90 days, collected rigorously, making tampering hard. Yet, for recent drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair serves as a long-term record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximately 3-month detection duration for substances like alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to ship.

A 1.5-inch piece of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a similar quantity of body hair might be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This stage confirms the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid test for substance misuse. Although Screening is an economical way to exclude drug usage on most samples, any positive results require confirmation to be court-admissible. Any presumptive positive Screening samples necessitate a secondary verification.

If a sample is presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is collected from the initial sample for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is recognized as a highly challenging methodology.

Any positive Screening result is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed if needed. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is endorsed to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical usage data: It yields a substance use pattern over time, not just recent behavior.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual variations in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In River Oaks, TX, hair follicle testing offers clear advantages over urine tests with its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests can reveal drug use from up to 90 days ago, unlike urine tests which only detect recent use. This makes hair testing invaluable for employers seeking to uphold rigorous drug-free policies, giving them a more comprehensive substance use history of their applicants.

Extended Detection Window

With an extended detection period of up to 90 days, hair follicle testing provides a detailed overview of an individual's substance use history in River Oaks, TX. Employers gain deeper insights into a candidate’s past drug usage, which goes beyond the limitations of shorter window testing methods. This long-term detection capability ensures informed decisions based on substantial data.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In River Oaks, TX, hair follicle tests offer a tamper-resistant solution that significantly reduces sample adulteration risks. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
