At Accredited Drug Testing, we're experts in conducting thorough hair follicle drug tests in Rock Island, Texas. For those in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol assessment, we offer specialized hair testing and have facilities across all cities nationwide capable of performing these analyses. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body, hair tests can screen for drugs and alcohol/ETG or be customized for other needs.

Recently, drug testing protocols have increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. This method is frequently preferred by employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals over the conventional urine test. Hair follicle testing is popular with employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, courts, and probationers. Its chief advantage is an extended detection window—up to 90 days—gathered in a supervised setting, making manipulation nearly impossible. Still, for recent use within 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the hair's fibers as it grows. By obtaining hair samples near the scalp, one can achieve a detection range of up to about three months for substances. Gathering hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch cut, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for screening and validation. For tests like EtG add-ons or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is recommended. If head hair isn’t available, an equivalent body hair amount can be collected. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair only, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in processing a drug test result in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial input of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes checking that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data recording not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Though Screening offers a cost-effective approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a confirmed positive is required for court acceptance. Samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample show presumed positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), marking hair screening as the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of all positive screen results is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation as needed. Each stage from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can uncover drug activity for up to 90 days, while urine tests have shorter detection periods.
  • High accuracy: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronicles drug use history: It reveals a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for recent use detection: Up to a week (5-7 days) is needed for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration levels in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
