Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Rolling Meadows, Texas. Those in need of hair drug or alcohol screenings will find specialized services in hair testing at our centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair suffices for testing. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer custom testing solutions.

Hair follicle testing has increasingly become the preferred method for drug screening in recent years. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and addiction specialists now favor hair testing over conventional urine analyses. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal bodies, and certain probation cases rely on hair testing. The key advantage lies in its extended detection window—up to 90 days—using observed processes, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, for detecting recent drug intake within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for detecting the consumption of drugs and alcohol. The hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers during their growth, providing a prolonged history of drug and alcohol usage. By collecting samples near the scalp, a detection period of around three months for drugs and alcohol is achievable. Hair samples are straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

Collecting a sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) from the scalp area provides a 100mg sample, which is optimal for screening and validation. When conducting EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It’s advisable to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be accessed, a corresponding quantity of body hair can be used as a substitute. The term ‘head hair’ specifically refers to scalp hair, while ‘body hair’ encompasses all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in a laboratory involves four fundamental stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the initial sample processing takes place, incorporating verifications of proper sealing and shipment, the assignment of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completion of any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is conducted to swiftly identify potential drugs of abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-effective method to assess drug usage across most samples, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation for any court-related admissibility. Samples presumed positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

In the event of a presumptively positive result during Screening, additional samples are extracted from the original collection and prepared for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than methods such as urine or oral fluid analysis, highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening methodology.

Confirmation of any positive Screening results is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to Confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure, ranging from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that offer a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are very challenging to deceive, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical usage data: Hair drug tests can reflect a drug use pattern over a span of time, instead of just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: A period of 5-7 days is necessary for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost considerations: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to other methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth rate variations can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
