Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Rosebud, Texas. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, they have centers available nationwide for convenient testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity over traditional urine tests for drug detection. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals favor hair tests because of their extended detection period—usually up to 90 days—making them hard to tamper with. Despite their effectiveness, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting recent drug use in the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent instrument for detecting alcohol and drug use. It offers a prolonged history by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand fibers as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of up to three months for drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) located nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, enhanced panels, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It is recommended to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equal volume of body hair can be obtained. When referring to head hair, it implies scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other hair types like facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first stage where a sample is processed into the lab's system. It includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is the preliminary rapid test for substance abuse. While Screening is economical for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result must be validated to be valid in court. Positive samples in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in Screening, more hair is taken from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the toughest method to perform.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation, if necessary. The lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Chronological data: Provides insight into the pattern of drug use over a duration of time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent consumption: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to appear in the hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Influences like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
