In Round Top, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair analysis and have test centers in cities nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is typically required from the scalp or body. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

Lately, drug testing has increasingly relied on hair follicle analysis. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over the traditional urine analyses. Hair tests benefit organizations with no-drug policies, legal systems, and individuals on probation. One advantage is their extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under supervision and hard to falsify. However, for recent use within 5 days, urine tests still lead in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has evolved into an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This encompasses confirming the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid check for illicit drug usage. Although Screening offers a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be verified for court admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a concentration much lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Cheat resistance: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical data: It illustrates a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally carry a higher cost than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Round Top, TX, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing due to its superior detection capabilities. Benefits of Hair Testing:

  • Extended detection window: Up to 90 days.
  • Observed collection: Reduces cheating risk.
  • High accuracy: Reliable results.
Compared to urine tests, hair tests offer a more comprehensive and tamper-proof method.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
