Certified Drug Testing offers all-inclusive hair follicle drug testing in Russellville, Texas. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair screening, with locations in every city across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body suffices. Hair tests can examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a method of choice in drug examinations. Many employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer a hair drug test over the usual urine test. This is due to its preference by employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, legal entities, and probation cases. A key advantage is that hair follicle testing offers a more extended detection time, up to 90 days, with observed collection and high difficulty in test tampering. However, for detecting very recent use (within five days), urine testing remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has evolved into a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers of hair strands trap biomarkers, providing a detailed record of substance use over an extended period. When hair is gathered close to the scalp, it offers an estimated detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable amount of body hair may be obtained. When referring to head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial phase of systemizing a sample in a laboratory. This process checks sample sealing and shipping, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial assessment for drug abuse. While cost-effective, positive screens must undergo confirmation to hold up in legal settings. Samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If a presumptive positive is indicated during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the specimen for further Extraction. Drugs are derived from hair at far lower concentrations compared to other methods (for example, urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably complex.

Confirmation of positive screening results relies on GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples indicative of presumptive positive outcomes undergo a washing process prior to confirmation as needed. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing identifies substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine testing has a more limited detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thereby enhancing result reliability.
  • Shows usage patterns: Displays a timeline of drug use instead of solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other forms of drug testing.
  • Variable outcomes: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
