Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Salt Gap, Texas. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is skilled in hair testing with centers across all cities nationwide capable of conducting a hair analysis. Generally, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be tested. Hair samples can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has increasingly included hair follicle assessments. Numerous employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse specialists now favor a hair drug test over the typical urine examination. Hair follicle tests are preferred by organizations with firm drug policy enforcement, courts, and individuals under probation. The key advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended detection window, up to 90 days, carried out under observation, and is extremely difficult to manipulate. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use over the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended history of drug and alcohol usage by embedding biomarkers within the hair's fibers. When hair is clipped close to the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to about 3 months. Hair is straightforward to collect, hard to tamper with, and easy to mail.

A 1.5-inch long section of around 200 strands of hair, roughly equating to the width of a #2 pencil, collected near the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, the standard quantity for testing. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests more than 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It is advisable to measure the hair sample's weight using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a proportionate quantity of body hair can be sourced. Referring to head hair denotes scalp hair solely, whereas body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab-processing of a drug test outcome involves these four core stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This ensures the sample's seal and shipping were correctly executed, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any missing data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary review for drugs. Although an economical technique to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening must be substantiated to hold up in court. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample return presumptively positive from Screening, further hair is extracted from the original specimen for Preparation. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a concentration notably lower than alternative methods (like urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug testing.

Final confirmation of a positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as needed. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection duration: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with narrower detection periods.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug tests are resistant to manipulation, enhancing result credibility.
  • Chronological data provision: This test can display a timeline of drug consumption over time rather than recent use only.

Limitations:

  • Can’t detect immediate use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the examination focuses on the hair shaft, and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

    Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
