In San Elizario, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. If you require hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in these tests, with facilities nationwide equipped to perform them. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair analyses can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific testing needs.

Recently, the prevalence of hair follicle drug testing has increased. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists now prefer it over conventional urine evaluations. Zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probation services rely on this method due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, rendering it nearly tamper-proof. Nevertheless, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers a long-term record of substance use. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use over an estimated three-month duration. Its collection is straightforward, tampering resistance is higher, and shipping is uncomplicated.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to determine the specimen’s weight. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers strictly to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process primarily involves four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab’s system. This phase includes checking that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any extra information not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for substance misuse. Although Screening is an economical means to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result necessitates verification for legal admissibility. Any samples tentatively positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

When a sample tests tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from the hair at substantially lower concentrations than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a particularly challenging technique to perform.

Confirmation for any positive Screening results is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Before confirmation, all samples assumed positive are cleaned as necessary. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited in accordance to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect substance use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests with a shorter detection window.
  • Cheating is difficult: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, thus ensuring more accurate results.
  • Records historical substance use: Indicating usage patterns over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug-testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In San Elizario, TX, the advantages of hair follicle testing over urine evaluation are clear. Hair tests boast a broader detection window, capturing drug use patterns far beyond the capabilities of urine tests. They also provide a more thorough and reliable assessment of an individual's substance history, unmatched by traditional methods.

Employers find hair testing superior due to its difficulty to alter or cheat. While urine tests are limited in their detection duration, hair tests ensure a comprehensive analysis over a span of up to 90 days, offering confidence in results that urine tests cannot match.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in San Elizario, TX, detects drug use over an extensive period of up to 90 days, surpassing the limitations of other testing methods. This broader window provides employers with a nuanced understanding of an individual’s substance use history, crucial for making informed hiring and retention decisions.

This extended detection capability is a strategic advantage, allowing employers to evaluate not just recent behaviors but long-term patterns, cultivating a more secure and drug-free workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The hair follicle testing method in San Elizario, TX, greatly reduces the likelihood of sample adulteration. Its collection process is supervised, making it challenging to compromise, ensuring that results received are trustworthy and unchallenged. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
