Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in San Patricio, Texas. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers nationwide that can conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head is required, but body hair can be used too. Tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair testing requirements.

The hair follicle drug test has become increasingly common in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for this over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probation officers often use hair tests due to their extensive detection period, which can reach 90 days. Hair tests are collected under supervision, minimizing the chance of tampering. However, for detecting recent use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer around a 3-month period for evaluating alcohol and drug use. Hair sampling is straightforward to perform, relatively resistant to tampering, and uncomplicated to transport.

A section measuring 1.5 inches and comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil in size) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for testing and verifying results. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen mass of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample's weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be retrieved. When discussing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other forms of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal steps in a laboratory's drug test result process: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s procedures. This phase ensures that the sample was adequately sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data not supplied by the electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although it is an economical way to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch and readied for Extraction. During this phase, substances are drawn from hair at concentrations much lower than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug assessments.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is executed through methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, as required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and their ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine analyses have shorter monitoring periods.
  • Low likelihood of manipulation: Hair drug tests are challenging to alter, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows historical usage: It can reveal a timeline of drug usage, not just recent instances.

Limitations:

  • No immediate detection: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair pigmentation and individual hair growth rates may impact metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: While commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strands, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in San Patricio, TX significantly outshines urine testing through its remarkable detection accuracy and dependability. Unlike urine tests, hair analyses can reveal drug use over a prolonged period, offering a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance habits. The likelihood of maskable results decreases, enhancing the reliability of screening procedures.

Extended Detection Window

With a detection window extending up to 90 days, hair follicle testing in San Patricio, TX provides an exceptional advantage. Employers gain a detailed understanding of an employee's or applicant's substance use history. This long-term detection offers insights far beyond typical urine tests, ensuring a thorough and informed assessment of an individual's drug history.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In San Patricio, TX, the hair follicle testing method stands out for its resistance to tampering. Since the sample collection involves obtaining hair, altering or substituting the sample is nearly impossible. This robust method ensures that results are uncontaminated and trustworthy, providing unquestionable evidence of substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
