Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug assessments in San Perlita, Texas. Whether your need involves hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing is supported by our ability to conduct tests in various Nationwide locations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair analyses cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing capabilities.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair analysis over conventional urine tests. Used by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, or probationary individuals, one key advantage is a significantly longer detection window, up to 90 days, making it extremely challenging to deceive. However, for recent drug use, within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is now regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol presence. Hair captures a prolonged history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sourced near the scalp, it can indicate a use period of up to three months for substances. Hair is easily gathered, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to dispatch.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hairs (equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg, an optimal quantity for both screening and confirming results. For EtG, additional checks, or tests beyond ten panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for precise measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other types (face, underarms, etc.).

Process Overview

The sequence of actions in lab processing for a drug test outcome includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning integrates the sample into the lab's system, ensuring it was properly sealed, shipped, and then assigns it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) and addresses any extra data input not covered by electronic custody systems.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening provides a budget-friendly method to detect drug usage among the majority of samples, further confirmation is necessary for positive screens to be valid in legal contexts. Any samples showing presumptive positives in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

If Screening detects presumptive positives, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. This phase involves drug retrieval from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods, like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening more challenging.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, meets scrutiny under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use over a span of up to 90 days, a longer period than urine testing.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are particularly difficult to alter, ensuring more dependable results.
  • Tracks usage history: Offers an overview of drug consumption over time, rather than just current use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair shade and unique growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strand and not the follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
