Process Overview

The laboratory process for evaluating a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In the Accessioning phase, a sample is first recorded into the laboratory’s system. If a sample is tentatively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for further analysis. A positive Screening result undergoes Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples that are presumptively positive are cleansed before Confirmation is performed, if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

The joint meeting of the Society of Hair Testing (SoHT) and the Italian Group of Forensic Toxicologists (GTFI) was organized in Verona, June 8–10, 2022, and hosted by the Legal Medicine team of the Verona University Hospital, directed by Franco Tagliaro together with Federica Bortolotti and Rossella Gottardo.
