Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Santa Cruz, Texas. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing, with facilities available in cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and are suitable for other tailored testing needs.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly integrated hair follicle tests. Hair drug tests are now preferred over standard urine tests by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals. With a zero-tolerance policy, employers, courts, and probationary individuals often opt for hair follicle tests due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days. This tested method ensures accuracy even though urine tests are more reliable for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have emerged as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to nearly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, an optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplements, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement is recommended. In cases where scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When referencing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair refers to all additional hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result entails four essential phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s framework. This entails verifying the sample was securely sealed and dispatched, allocating a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial swift evaluation for abusive substances. While Screening offers a low-cost means to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples preliminarily positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any favorable screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Sustained detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: It is exceedingly tough to falsify a hair drug test, thus yielding more precise results.
  • Yields historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug use across a timeframe, rather than just current use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate usage: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug residues in the hair.

Note: Frequently called "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
