In Seadrift, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you are in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, supported by facilities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. These tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other hair testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for workplaces with strict no-drug policies and for those on probation. The key advantage is their longer detection window, up to 90 days, with collection under observation, making them hard to tamper with. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and other drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected close to the scalp, hair can reveal drug or alcohol presence for a period of up to roughly 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest weighing the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable amount of body hair may be obtained. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result primarily involves four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial management of a sample within a laboratory's framework. This includes checking that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any necessary additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for the presence of drugs. While Screening efficiently excludes drug intake in the vast majority of cases, a positive screen must be validated to be legally acceptable. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for further preparation in the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted at much lower levels compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which contributes to hair drug screening being the most challenging method to conduct.

Verification of any positive Screening result is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation, as required. The comprehensive laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Highlights of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine analyses which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, leading to higher accuracy of results.
  • Chronological use data: Provides a timeline of drug usage over time rather than capturing only recent use.

Challenges:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It typically takes 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly dubbed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
