In Selma, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in both drug and alcohol hair analyses, we provide testing through a nationwide network of facilities in various cities. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body suffices for testing. Our hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for screening. This is increasingly being adopted by employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts over urine testing. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation officers favor hair tests due to their longer detection window of up to 90 days. Although hair tests provide an observed collection process, urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use detection within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment has emerged as a robust mechanism for pinpointing drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures enduring records of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair is capable of providing a detection span of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for examination and affirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn't accessible, a similar quantity of body hair could be utilized. When mentioning head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal phases in laboratory handling of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This involves ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, targeting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any further data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses an initial swift examination for drug misuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug usage on most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally acceptable. Samples giving a presumptive positive in Screening mandate a subsequent verification.

If a sample gives a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a much reduced concentration than through other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug screening is among the most challenging methodologies.

Verification of any positive screening result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleansed prior to confirmation when needed. The overall lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a narrower detection scope.
  • Cheating is tough: It is exceptionally challenging to falsify a hair drug test, rendering the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a blueprint of drug consumption across a timeline, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to register in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses generally incur higher costs than other drug testing approaches.
  • Outcome variations: Aspects like hair coloration and personal discrepancies in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently identified as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually scrutinizes the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Selma, TX, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. Unlike urine tests, which detect recent drug use, hair testing provides an extensive detection window. It accurately identifies substance use up to 90 days prior, showcasing superior assessment capabilities.

Hair tests reduce the risk of adulteration, unlike urine tests that are more susceptible to tampering. The observed collection process ensures that the sample's integrity remains uncompromised, leading to trustworthy results for employers.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests in Selma, TX, extend the detection window significantly, covering up to 90 days of drug use. This extended timeframe offers employers a detailed view of an individual’s substance behavior, aiding in thorough assessments.

The wide detection range of hair follicle tests helps in identifying patterns of use rather than isolated incidents. It empowers employers with comprehensive data to shape their decisions regarding employment or disciplinary actions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Selma, TX, hair follicle testing provides a robust defense against sample manipulation. Its design thwarts adulteration attempts, delivering consistent and credible outcomes. This honesty in testing assures employers of the sample’s authenticity.

Hair tests' resistance to tampering safeguards the results' integrity. Unlike other methods susceptible to alteration, the incontrovertible evidence from hair samples ensures reliable evaluations, fostering trust in conclusions drawn from the analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
