Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Seymour Rural, Texas. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty in hair testing ensures that we have test centers throughout the country that can conduct a hair test. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary personnel. The key advantage of hair tests is their longer detection window, often up to 90 days, performed under supervision, and extremely difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance use as it captures biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. Collected near the scalp, it provides up to a 3-month detection period for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (essentially the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an optimal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, collect an equal volume of body hair. The reference to head hair implies scalp hair only. Body hair denotes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four central steps in processing a drug test result at the laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a specimen into a lab's system. This step includes confirming the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drug presence. While it offers a cost-efficient means to exclude drug consumption in most cases, a positive result must undergo confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples deemed presumptive positives in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair in lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive results post-Screening is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples exhibiting presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation if required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite difficult, hence ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It charts a trend of substance use across a timeframe, not solely immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Seymour Rural, TX, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing in several ways. Benefits of hair testing include superior detection accuracy and reliability compared to traditional urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
