Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Shady Shores, Texas. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we are proficient in hair testing and boast centers across cities Nationwide to carry out such assays. To proceed, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or elsewhere is generally required. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer various tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a common method for drug screening. Several employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair testing over conventional urine tests. Essayed by employers with strict no-drug use policies, legal systems, and probationers, these tests offer prolonged drug detection—typically up to 90 days—ensuring it’s hard to dupe. However, for recent drug use within past 5 days, urine tests remain top in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective means for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair strands capture biomarkers, which reflect prolonged drug and alcohol use history. When cut close to the scalp, hair can detect the presence of drugs and alcohol for approximately three months. Hair is easy to collect, tough to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hairs (similar to a #2 pencil in diameter), taken near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analysis, or tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen amounting to 150mg is advised. Utilize a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn’t an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. The term "head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test result in a laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step wherein the sample is entered into the lab’s system. This phase includes checking if the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any lacking data entry that an electronic chain of custody system hasn’t provided.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While it’s a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use in most samples, to hold up in a court of law, any positive screen must be validated. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If Screening results are presumptively positive, additional hair is pulled from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. During this stage, drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations than found in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), leading to hair testing being the most complex methodology.

Confirmatory testing of any positive screen result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation, as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation follows a review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests have the capability to identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Patterns historical consumption: Hair drug tests offer insight into drug usage patterns over an extended period, rather than solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Detection of drugs in hair requires approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair testing is typically more costly compared to other drug detection methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair samples.

Note: While commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the test itself analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
