Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Shavano Park, Texas. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we have facilities nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, typically from the head or body, is required. This testing can screen for substances, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored specifications.

In recent years, hair follicle tests have gained more traction in drug screening procedures. These tests are preferred by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals due to their extended detection capabilities. Hair follicle testing is favored by those enforcing zero-tolerance policies, providing a detection window of up to 90 days with an observed collection, almost eliminating the chance for tampering. For recent use, within a 5-day window, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol use. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and other substances by embedding indicators within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected from near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 90-day detection period for alcohol and various substances. It is straightforward to collect, less prone to tampering, and easy to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising roughly 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) cut close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional checks, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is missing, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result involves four critical steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into the lab's system. This step includes confirming the sample is sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs validation for court acceptance. Any sample appearing positive in Screening requires additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, extra hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), which is why hair drug testing is the most complex method to perform.

Confirmation for any positive Screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to verification as necessary. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: It's extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more dependable results.
  • Offers chronological insights: It can illustrate a pattern of substance use over time, instead of just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
