Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Sheldon, Texas. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this field, with centers available in every city across the nation to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be used for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other test options.

Recently, drug testing practices have increasingly involved hair follicle drug tests. Many organizations, legal entities, and substance abuse experts request hair drug tests instead of the traditional urine screen. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, the judiciary, and those on probation often use hair follicle tests. The key advantage is a longer detection window of approximately 90 days, using a supervised collection process, and it is nearly impossible to tamper with. However, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is recognized as an efficient means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of an extending hair strand. When clipped close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. This method is straightforward for collection, resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches bearing about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels over 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When head hair is mentioned, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the initial incorporation of a sample into the lab’s system. This entails ensuring the sample is correctly sealed and transported, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any further data entries absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in the bulk of samples, a positive result needs confirmation before it is deemed court-admissible. Any samples yielding a presumptive positive outcome in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, extra hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at significantly reduced concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen outcome is through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive screening undergo washing before confirmation, if required. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed against both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug usage up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test proves very difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can trace a drug use pattern over an extended timeline, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Attributes such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may impact drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," this procedure examines the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
