At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Singleton, Texas. Our specialty is in hair testing, available at various centers nationwide. To conduct this test, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is typically required, either from the scalp or body. We can test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and tailor other testing options to suit specific needs.

Increasingly, drug testing methodologies now include hair follicle tests. They are often preferred by employers, court systems, and substance abuse specialists over urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are advantageous for zero-tolerance policy employers, courts, and those on probation due to their extensive detection period of around 90 days, observation collection process, and difficulty to tamper with. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair acts as a historical record of drug and alcohol consumption by preserving biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can offer an approximately 3-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. Collection is straightforward, making it difficult to tamper with and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (roughly the circumference of a #2 pencil) taken from near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for testing and verification. For EtG, extra tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the hair on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be available, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. The term ‘head hair’ specifically refers to scalp hair. Conversely, ‘body hair’ encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Overview of the Process

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample upon its entry into the laboratory system. This process ensures that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entries not already provided by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening provides a preliminary analysis for substances of abuse. Although it is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive result from a screen must be confirmed to be legally valid in court. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at noticeably lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair testing a challenging methodology to execute.

Positive screening results are validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, while urine tests provide a much shorter detection period.
  • Challenges in tampering: Hair drug tests are notably harder to manipulate, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical usage data: It can reveal a pattern of drug use spanning a significant period, not just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual growth differences can impact the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis is done on the strand of hair, not the follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
