Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Sonterra, Texas. Specializing in both drug and alcohol testing, we operate numerous centers across the nation ready to conduct these tests. Typically, you will require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Hair tests are adaptable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom testing needs.

The popularity of hair follicle drug testing has grown significantly in recent times. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Companies with zero tolerance towards drug use, legal entities, and individuals under probation find hair tests advantageous. The main advantage is the extended detection capability of up to 90 days. For drug use in the last five days, urine tests remain most reliable.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has been recognized as an effective method for identifying the presence of drugs and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibrous structure of the hair as it grows. When clipped close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection range of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and conveniently shipped.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (approximately equivalent to a #2 pencil's width) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is an optimal sample size for initial screening and verification. For EtG assessments, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. Reference to head hair specifically implies scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in a lab involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary integration of a specimen into a lab's system. This step involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening includes an initial rapid assessment for prohibited substances. While it is an economical method to exclude drug presence in most tests, confirming a positive result is necessary for legal validation. Samples that are initially positive require a secondary confirmation test.

For samples initially testing positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample for the Extraction process. Drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening remarkably complex.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Prior to such confirmation, all tentative positive samples undergo a cleansing process as required. The full processing from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can ascertain drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Cheating is difficult: Tampering with hair drug tests is highly challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides usage patterns: It reflects a timeline of substance usage, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Does not indicate recent use: Detection of drugs in hair requires about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences in hair color and growth rates among individuals can influence the levels of drug metabolites detected in hair.

Note: Although often noted as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair shaft and not the follicle itself beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
