In South Bell, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Specializing in both drug and alcohol testing, our centers operate across numerous cities, including those Nationwide. Typically, an individual needs 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, preferably from the crown, for accurate analysis. These tests are designed to detect drugs, ETG, or other customizable testing requirements.

The shift towards utilizing hair follicle drug tests has increased, spearheaded by employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse specialists. This method is quickly favoring over the traditional urine tests due to its reliability. Hair follicle assessments provide an extensive detection period that can reach up to 90 days, collected under supervision and is nearly tamper-proof. However, for detecting recent drug use, within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has been recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers of growing hair strands capture biomarkers, providing a long-term record of alcohol and drug use. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. It's easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from near the scalp will produce 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing process consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring the sample has been correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any required data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid examination for drugs of abuse. It's a cost-effective method to exclude drug use for most samples, but any positive Screen result must be confirmed to be legally acceptable. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening results is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is exceedingly challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, thus enhancing its accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When considering drug testing options in South Bell, TX, hair follicle tests trump urine tests in several key areas. One significant advantage is their impeccable detection accuracy, capturing substance use over an extensive timeframe. Unlike urine tests, hair testing leaves little room for manipulation, and their results are valued for their precision and authenticity by employers, courts, and probation officers alike.

Hair follicle testing is vastly superior to urine testing because it offers a comprehensive detection range that urine tests simply can't match. The accuracy of hair testing provides unmatched reliability, particularly valuable to entities enforcing strict drug-free standards. This method is a trusted resource in assessing substance use history, providing more substantial and insightful data than urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing provides an extended detection window, making it highly valuable in South Bell, TX. It offers insights into substance use up to 90 days, unlike traditional methods that offer limited time ranges. Employers using this method can gain an in-depth understanding of an individual's drug use history, crucial for ensuring a safe and compliant workplace.

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing creates a detailed overview of substance use, extending up to three months. This surpasses the capabilities of short-term testing methods, offering an elongated look back period. This feature ensures employers can bank on genuine historical substance data, aiding in wise decision-making without relying on short-lived results.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In South Bell, TX, hair follicle tests are acclaimed for their robust tamper-resistant features. These tests considerably mitigate risks associated with sample adulteration, providing secure and trustworthy results. Their design is foolproof compared to other methods, ensuring that the substance use data collected is genuine and free from external alterations.

The reliability of hair follicle testing lies in its inherent resistance to tampering. This feature makes them a preferred choice for ensuring that the results obtained are credible and devoid of common manipulation tactics seen with other samples. Trust in the accuracy of these tests is paramount for organizations and individuals who require foolproof drug analysis results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
