In Southton, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our specialization in hair analysis is supported by nationwide testing centers skilled at performing such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. The tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized as needed.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity recently for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly favor this method over traditional urine tests due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days. This method is employed by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probation services and is known for its resistant nature to tampering. However, urine tests remain more effective for detecting recent usage within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a noteworthy method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended history of substance usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands' fibers. When sampled near the scalp, it can present a detection period of up to three months for these substances. Hair is easy to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

An optimal sample consists of a segment 1.5 inches long with roughly 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil), yielding about 100mg for evaluation. For EtG, additional targets, and tests exceeding ten panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advised. We advocate using a jeweler’s scale for precision. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory processing entails Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the sample's preliminary handling within a lab's framework, ensuring the integrity of sealing and shipping, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any remaining data input absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening includes a preliminary examination for substances of abuse. Although it’s cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, any positive must be verified to be legally defensible. Presumptive positive samples during Screening require definitive confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. In this procedure, substances are isolated from hair in much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Positive Screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are cleansed before proceeding as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification along with accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing identifies drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter periods.
  • High difficulty to circumvent: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Delivers usage history: It shows patterns of substance use over time rather than only recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent detection: Substances take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personalized hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: While sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Outperforms Urine Testing in Southton, TX: Hair follicle testing provides far superior detection accuracy compared to urine tests. It enables a thorough substance history check, capturing usage evidence over a broader timeframe, which ultimately ensures more definitive results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
