Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Spade, Texas. If you require a drug or alcohol examination using hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in the field, with testing facilities across all U.S. cities available to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary for the test. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for conducting drug analyses. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair testing over the traditional urine test. Zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probation officers depend on hair follicle tests. The main advantage is its ability to detect drug use over a longer period, generally up to 90 days, under observed conditions, making it hard to tamper with. However, for detecting usage within the past five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a detailed record of alcohol and drug intake by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, a hair sample can offer a detection window of up to about three months for alcohol and various drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A hair sample of roughly 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both initial screening and confirmation processes. For tests like EtG, additional panels, or those in excess of 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. If head hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair. In contrast, body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Overview of the Process

There are four crucial steps in processing a drug test result in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial processing of the sample as it enters the laboratory system. This step includes confirming that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accession Number), and completing any necessary data entry that isn't accomplished through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary and rapid method to check for drugs of abuse. While it offers a cost-effective means of identifying potential drug use for most samples, a positive result during Screening must be confirmed before it can be legally valid. Any samples with a presumptively positive screen are subject to additional confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for the Extraction phase. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a substantially lower concentration than other methods, such as urine or oral fluid tests, making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is performed using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is conducted under the oversight of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days prior, whereas urine tests have a shorter range of detection.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Tracks drug use history: It provides insight into patterns of drug usage over time, beyond just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify recent drug use: Drug presence in hair becomes detectable only after 5-7 days.
  • Higher costs: Generally more expensive compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often referred to as "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis is done on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
