Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examination services in Stanton, TX. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our centers, located across cities nationwide, are equipped to conduct hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customizable options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a common method for drug screenings. This type of test is now preferred by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over the usual urine test. It is favored by employers with strict drug policies, legal systems, and probationary bodies for its extended detection period of up to 90 days and its observed collection method that resists tampering. However, urine tests remain preferable for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has evolved as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair maintains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence by encasing biomarkers within the strands' fibers. When sourced from the scalp area, hair can offer detection for drugs and alcohol spanning up to three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, consisting of approximately 200 strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analysis, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is absent, a similar volume of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair denotes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four crucial phases in the lab processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's preliminary processing within a lab's framework. This stage comprises ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial rapid assessment for drug misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug consumption in the majority of cases, a positive screen must be validated for court acceptance. Any samples presumptively positive during Screening require secondary verification.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction process. At this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to alternate methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is notably challenging to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumed positive specimens undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insights: It can outline a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Stanton, TX, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests with its superior detection range and reliability. Hair tests provide substantial advantages with a longer identification window, extending up to 90 days, which urine tests lack.
Thus, with their higher accuracy and less susceptibility to tampering, hair tests deliver peace of mind and secure employment assessments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
