Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations, Accredited Drug Testing provides these services in Summerfield, Texas. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, we operate centers across all U.S. cities, ready to conduct your hair examination. It's generally necessary to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Our tests assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can include custom hair analysis options.

Over recent years, drug analysis methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle testing. Employers, judicial systems, and substance counselors now commonly favor hair testing over traditional urine exams. Hair tests are ideal for employers adhering to strict drug policies, courts, and monitors for probation cases. A key advantage of hair analysis is its extended drug detection window, reaching up to 90 days, observed under controlled conditions, and resistant to tampering. Nevertheless, for drug usage within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can provide a long-term record of substance use by preserving biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When gathered close to the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and drug usage. It is easy to collect, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the recommended amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, additional screenings, and tests over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, equivalent body hair may be used. By 'head hair', we mean only scalp hair. 'Body hair' includes other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary stages of laboratory processing for a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial stage of sample integration into a lab's system. This step encompasses confirming proper sample sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick assessment for drug abuse. While it is a cost-efficient measure to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive screening must be verified for legal acceptability. Samples with presumptive positive results from Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample in preparation for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing a complex technique to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive findings are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter time frame.
  • Resistance to cheating: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical data provision: They offer detailed patterns of drug use over time, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Ineligibility for detecting recent consumption: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become present in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than alternative methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
