Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing in Sun Valley, Texas. If you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with facilities across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is needed. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a standard method for drug testing. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now opt for hair tests over conventional urine tests. Companies with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationers frequently use hair follicle tests. The key advantage is a longer drug use detection period of up to 90 days, with supervised collection and minimal risk of cheating. Conversely, urine remains the most reliable for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by incorporating biomarkers within the hair strand's growth fibers. When trimmed near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, the chance of tampering is low, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch segment containing around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Employ a jeweler's scale for accurate measurement. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be used instead. Head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair only, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four pivotal phases in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the sample's initial processing into the lab's framework. It confirms the sample's seal and correct shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry that an electronic chain of custody doesn’t already cover.

Screening constitutes a preliminary assessment for drug misuse. Though Screening is a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug consumption in most samples, any positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples that test as presumptively positive in Screening proceed to a secondary verification.

Should a sample test as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and gets ready for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn out from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug analysis the most complex methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening is completed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples tentatively positive undergo a wash as required before confirmation. The full ordeal from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and is certified according to ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a limited period.
  • Resistance to fake results: It is notably challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result credibility.
  • Offers comprehensive data: It reveals a drug use pattern over a duration, not just the immediate past usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days post-drug use for detection in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
