Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle tests in Sunray, Texas. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, our centers nationwide—including in Sunray—can conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed for analysis, with options for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom tests.

Hair follicle tests have become more prevalent recently, being favored by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over urine tests. Used by entities with strict anti-drug policies, these tests offer a longer detection span of up to 90 days and are hard to falsify. However, for drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective method for detecting substance use. The hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug intake by preserving biomarkers within the fiber strands of hair growth. When taken near the scalp, hair samples can offer a detection period of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and drug identification. Collecting hair is straightforward, it is relatively hard to tamper with, and shipping is convenient.

A hair segment measuring 1.5 inches comprised of roughly 200 strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the head yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg of hair is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing is advocated. If head hair is not accessible, an equal quantity of body hair may be retrieved. “Head hair” refers exclusively to hair from the scalp; “body hair” encompasses all other hair varieties (like facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory evaluation of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample’s preliminary processing into the lab’s system, ensuring proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finalizing any additional data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes an initial rapid evaluation for abusive substances. Screening is economically viable for eliminating drug use across most samples, yet a positive result here mandates confirmation to hold up in court. Samples indicative of positive outcomes during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Presumptively positive samples in Screening undergo further hair retrieval from the initial collection, then prepared for Extraction. This stage extracts drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques, such as urine or oral fluid, highlighting hair drug screening’s complexity.

Verification of positive screening outcomes is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating preliminary positives are cleansed pre-confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory sequence, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the directives and examinations of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug ingestion across a 90-day span, unlike urine tests with shorter detection capabilities.
  • Challenge to falsify: Manipulating a hair drug test is highly challenging, leading to more precise results.
  • Supplies historical evidence: Capable of showcasing a drug consumption pattern over time, rather than recent use alone.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection lacking: Detection of substances in hair requires an approximate time frame of 5-7 days.
  • Expense: The cost associated with hair drug testing is generally greater than other testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Multiple factors, including hair color and unique growth rates, can influence drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Although often identified as "hair follicle tests", the testing process examines the hair strand itself, not the subdermal hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
