Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Surfside Beach, TX. Our expertise ensures efficient hair and alcohol testing nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be tested. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized analyses.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests are becoming more common for drug testing. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals often request these tests, prioritizing them over standard urine tests. Hair tests cater to zero-tolerance policies, probation conditions, and judicial requirements, with the added advantage of detecting drugs for up to 90 days, through an almost uncheatable process. However, for detecting recent drug use of up to 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means to detect drug and alcohol use. Hair allows for a comprehensive history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to a nearly three-month detection period for substances. It is straightforward to collect, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sampling of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional panels, or exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. The use of a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be provided, body hair of equivalent volume may be used. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Drug test result processing encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the fundamental handling of a specimen in a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, issues a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handles any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening entails a preliminary review for drug presence. While Screening efficiently rules out substance use for most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples with presumed positive Screening outcomes necessitate further validation.

For samples marked as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and processed for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are isolated from the hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to others such as urine or saliva samples, illustrating why hair testing is the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if required. The entire lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter window.
  • Hard to circumvent: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Supplies historical patterns: It unveils patterns of substance use over time, rather than just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent usage: Drugs in hair need about 5-7 days post-use to become discernible.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors like hair pigmentation and personal hair growth variations can impact the metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While the term "hair follicle tests" is common, the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
