Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Sylvester, Texas. If a drug or alcohol test through hair analysis is necessary, our expertise in hair testing is supported by testing centers nationwide, ready to perform these tests. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is required for testing purposes. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized tests depending on needs.

Increasingly, drug testing methods have incorporated hair follicle testing rather than traditional urine analysis. Today, many employers, court systems, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair drug tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, the legal system, and probation officers commonly utilize hair follicle tests for their reliability. These tests offer a 90-day detection window, are conducted via an observed procedure, making them difficult to undermine. Urine tests, however, are more accurate for recent substance detection, specifically within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When clipped near the scalp, hair can indicate alcohol and drug use over a span of about three months. It's easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to send off.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil in thickness) from the scalp yields 100mg, the ideal quantity for testing and confirmation. For EtG add-ons and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accuracy. In cases where scalp hair is scarce, a similar amount of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (like facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in lab processing for drug testing: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into the lab’s framework. This step confirms that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any missing data not covered by an electronic custody chain.

Screening provides a preliminary examination for substance usage. Although economical for negating drug use across most samples, positive screens require validation for legal acceptance. Samples showing presumptive positive in Screening require further verification.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, more hair is obtained from the initial sample for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair, where the concentration is much lower than in other sampling methods (like urine or saliva), rendering hair drug testing the most challenging to execute.

Any presumptive positive screening result undergoes Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suggested positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The whole lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, follows the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and aligns with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair test is challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Shows historical patterns: It outlines drug habits over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Can't reveal recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly mislabeled as "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine samples in Sylvester, TX, the benefits stand out. Hair testing provides exceptional accuracy and reliability, positioning it as a superior option. Unlike urine tests, which may be limited, hair testing reveals detailed and dependable information regarding drug use. This distinction makes it a preferred choice for thorough substance assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
