Located in Talpa, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether for drug or alcohol assessments, our experts in hair testing are ready to assist, with testing centers available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair either from the head or body is required. This method can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom targets.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained favor over traditional urine tests. More employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists now demand this method. It serves zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probationary conditions. A significant advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window, often reaching up to 90 days, collected under observation, making tampering nearly impossible. However, for detecting very recent drug use, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a highly effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. The hair stores long-term drug and alcohol history by encapsulating biomarkers within its fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. It is easy to gather, less prone to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, an ideal amount for both initial testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's best to use a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. If no scalp hair is available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for obtaining a drug test result includes four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning phase involves initially processing a sample into the lab's system. This step checks if the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an introductory rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. While Screening is economical for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples that preliminarily test positive during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample initially tests positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and made ready for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug analysis is the most challenging method.

The Confirmation phase of any positive screen result is implemented via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have reduced detection periods.
  • Less susceptible to falsification: Cheating a hair drug analysis is extremely challenging, hence enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to appear detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses generally cost more than other drug analysis techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being frequently called "hair follicle tests", the evaluation is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Talpa, TX, the advantages of hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests are evident. Hair tests are known for superior detection of substances, allowing for a thorough check up to 90 days back. This enhances reliability, giving employers a detailed understanding of an individual’s drug history.

The choice between hair tests and urine tests often boils down to accuracy and credibility. Hair testing significantly reduces false-negative results, offering a clear picture of long-term substance use that urine tests simply cannot match.

Extended Detection Window

One of the greatest advantages of hair follicle testing in Talpa, TX is its extended detection window. This testing method can track drug use patterns spanning up to 90 days, providing employers with a comprehensive view of an individual's substance history.

Employers gain significant insights into an applicant or employee's past behavior with the use of hair tests. This long detection span helps in making informed decisions, ensuring a trustworthy and safe workplace environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
