Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Talty, Texas. Whether you need an alcohol or drug assessment, our centers are ready across the nation, offering expert hair testing solutions. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are required. This method allows analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become increasingly preferred for drug screenings over traditional methods. Used by employers, courts, and rehabilitation experts, they are favored for zero-tolerance policies. The key advantage lies in the extended detection period of up to 90 days, with monitored sample collection, making them nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of drug and alcohol usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When sampled close to the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month detection timeframe for substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hairs (similar to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, supplemental tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. By scalp hair, we mean head hair specifically, whereas body hair refers to any other types (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the stage where a sample is initially processed within a lab’s system. This includes ensuring the sample’s seal and correct shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for substances of abuse. While it is cost-effective for ruling out substance use in most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that are initially positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a sample is presumptively positive, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. At this stage, substances are drawn from the hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair analysis one of the most challenging methodologies.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficult to deceive: It is challenging to cheat a hair drug test, resulting in more credible results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair hue and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
