Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Tennyson, Texas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with testing facilities available in every city Nationwide to conduct a hair test. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the head or body for testing. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer customized testing solutions.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in substance screening. Various employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer a hair drug test over a traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests are employed by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation. The key advantage of hair tests is their extended detection window, which can reveal drug use up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. Nevertheless, for identifying drug use in the preceding 5 days, a urine test remains the most accurate assessment.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. It provides an extended record of substance abuse by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair. When hair is sampled close to the scalp, it offers a detection period of up to roughly three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch strand from about 200 hairs (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) cut near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for both initial screening and verification. For tests involving EtG, additional components, or more than 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, equivalent body hair may be used. Head hair strictly refers to scalp hair, while body hair indicates all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test samples involves four central stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is integrated into a lab’s system. This step involves checking the integrity of the sample's seal and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing information not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial assessment for drugs. While it's an economical way to exclude drug presence in most cases, a positive result in Screening must be confirmed for legal credibility. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Samples appearing positive in Screening undergo additional material extraction from the original sample in the Extraction step. Here, drugs are extracted at a lower concentration compared to other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing particularly challenging to conduct.

For any positive results in screening, Confirmation is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples presumed positive undergo required washing prior to confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory process, spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair protocol and meets ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite difficult, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks drug use history: It reveals patterns of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand itself rather than the follicle located under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
