In Tidehaven, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing presents extensive hair follicle drug assessments. For those needing a hair or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this field, offering facilities nationwide, including local centers for specimen collection. Hair length requirements range from 1.5 to 2 inches, applicable to head or body hair, allowing for drug, alcohol/ETG, or tailored tests.

Lately, drug assessments frequently incorporate hair follicle examinations, overtaking traditional urine tests. Employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair testing due to zero-tolerance policies. Hair tests provide detection for up to 90 days, are collected under observation, and resist tampering. However, for drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain optimal.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. Collecting hair near the scalp provides an approximately three-month detection window for substances. This method is easy to collect, relatively difficult to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, comprising about 200 strands of hair (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for both screening and confirmation. For testing involving EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is recommended to weigh the specimen. If head hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, it is specifically the scalp hair; body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a sample within a lab’s system. It includes verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any required data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary, cost-efficient inspection for drugs of abuse. Although it is effective for most samples, a positive screening result requires confirmation for courtroom admissibility. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Preparation for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening exceptionally challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each presumptive positive sample undergoes washing before confirmation as necessary. The laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests allow for the detection of substance use over a 90-day period, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test proves to be very challenging, rendering results more reliable.
  • Provides historical data: This method reveals substance use patterns over time, beyond merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: A period of 5-7 days is necessary for drugs to surface in hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and differences in individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
