Accredited Drug Testing provides full service for hair follicle drug testing in Tierra Bonita, Texas. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with centers located nationwide to serve your needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from your head or body. We offer thorough analysis of hair samples for drugs, alcohol/ETG, as well as other tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity over standard urine tests for screening drugs. Many businesses, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, as well as courts monitoring individuals on probation, choose hair follicle drug tests for their comprehensive detection benefits, identifying drug use up to 90 days back. Compared to urine tests for samples within the past 5 days, urine testing remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

The perception of hair testing as a potent mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption has grown. Hair captures biomarkers within its fibers as it grows, offering an extended history of substance use. By collecting hair near the scalp, one can achieve a detection period of roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 strands of hair (close to a #2 pencil in size) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, considered the perfect sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It's best to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically pertains to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair forms (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in the lab consists of four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample’s initial entry into the lab's system, ensuring it was sealed and dispatched correctly, issuing a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening acts as a preliminary rapid test for substance abuse. Although Screening economically helps eliminate drug use across most samples, any positive findings must undergo confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is taken from the original specimen for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a period extending to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection limits.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are challenging to tamper with, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical usage insight: They can reveal a drug use trend over extended periods, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Referred to often as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
