Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Tioga, Texas. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in this method and have facilities in every city nationwide capable of performing hair analysis. Typically, hair from the head's crown is used, but body hair is also suitable. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer custom testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more popular method for drug analysis. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine analysis. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation utilize hair tests. This method extends the detection period up to 90 days, involves supervised collection, and is hard to falsify. However, urine tests remain the most reliable for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol use. It offers a long-term trace of alcohol and other substances through captured biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over a span of nearly three months. The collection process for hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A specimen of 1.5 inches in length comprising approximately 200 strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for testing and validation. For EtG assessments, enhancements, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent amount of body hair can be obtained. The term head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test output: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about integrating a sample into a lab's system initially. It checks if the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigns a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic custody chain system.

Screening conducts a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is cost-efficient to exclude drug use across most specimens, any positive indication calls for validation to be valid in legal scenarios. Samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening need further verification.

In instances where Screening suggests positivity, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are isolated from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Validation of any positive Screening finding employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positivity receive a pre-confirmation wash where necessary. Every phase from Accessioning through Confirmation is reviewed against CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accords with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection span: Hair drug examinations can uncover drug intake for an interval extending to 90 days, contrasted with urine exams which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to defraud: Evading a hair drug test is immensely challenging, thereby increasing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical information: It can outline a trend of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent intake: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations tend to be more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair strand, not the subscalp hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
