Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Toco, Texas. If you're in need of a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise is in this area, with facilities nationwide ready to administer the examination. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. This method can test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for different substances.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a favored method in recent years for substance screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over the traditional urine test. Entities with strict no-drug policies, including employers and legal probation programs, utilize these tests. The key advantage is its significantly longer detection window, up to 90 days, making it challenging to evade detection. For drug use within the last 5 days, however, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analyses have emerged as an effective means for uncovering alcohol and drug consumption. Hair retains a prolonged history of substance exposure by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of developing hair strands. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal substance intake up to a roughly 3-month period for both alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to dispatch.

A 1.5-inch sample, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (resembling the circumference of a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp can yield 100 mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding ten, 150 mg of hair is advised. We advocate for weighing the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. The term head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other forms of hair (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The procedure of processing a drug test in a laboratory comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails integrating a sample into the laboratory's framework. This step involves ensuring the sample's seal and proper shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any outstanding data entry that the electronic chain of custody system does not provide.

Screening involves conducting a preliminary assessment for illicit substances. Although a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for judicial acceptance. Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening require an additional confirmation step.

In cases of presumptive positivity in Screening, further hair is drawn from the original sample for the Extraction phase. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis a challenging technique.

Positive results from screening are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation together with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a much narrower detection window.
  • Resistance to manipulation: The difficulty of falsifying a hair drug test results in more reliable outcomes.
  • Chronological pattern insights: Hair tests can offer insights into a longer history of drug use rather than only recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It typically requires 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur more costs compared to alternative drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually examine the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
