Accredited Drug Testing provides full hair follicle drug assessments in Tool, Texas. When in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with facilities in every U.S. city capable of conducting such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is required. Analytical capabilities encompass drugs, alcohol/ETG, or bespoke hair testing solutions.

The hair follicle drug test has increasingly become a favored method for drug screening. Employers, judicial bodies, and addiction specialists often mandate hair tests over urine. This method serves companies with strict drug policies, legal systems, and probationers. Its advantages include a detection window of up to 90 days, observation during collection, and high resistance to manipulation. Yet, urine remains optimal for detecting recent, within 5 days, drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair. When procured near the scalp, it offers up to an approximate 3-month window for detecting alcohol and substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch cluster of around 200 hair strands (approximating the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, ideal for assessment and validation. For EtG, additions, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accuracy. If scalp hair isn’t accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may suffice. When mentioning head hair, it pertains specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The critical phases in processing a drug test result in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab’s workflow. It checks for a properly sealed and shipped sample, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing information absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. Although it’s an economical approach to demarcate drug use for most samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for court submissions. All samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening demand follow-up confirmation.

Should a specimen test positively during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for further processing in Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (like urine or saliva), making it the most complex to execute.

Validating any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples considered presumptive positive receive a washing before confirmation if needed. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests identify drug use across 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to falsify: Challenging to manipulate a hair test, enhancing its precision.
  • Yields historical insights: Reveals a timeline of substance use over time, unlike immediate-use tests.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot trace recent intake: Drugs only become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally incur higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Influences like hair dye and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite common reference as "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair testing in Tool, TX outshines urine tests by offering superior accuracy and consistency. While urine tests provide a shorter detection window, hair tests reveal substance use over an extended period, offering a comprehensive assessment. This broad window makes hair follicle testing invaluable for long-term substance use analysis.

The reliability of hair testing comes from the observation-based collection method, vastly reducing the chances of tampering or substitution, hence fostering an environment of trust and fairness in monitoring standards.

Extended Detection Window

Extended detection window provided by hair follicle testing in Tool, TX allows a thorough overview of drug use history, spanning up to 90 days. This advantage equips employers with a detailed outlook on an applicant's or employee's drug usage, aiding in informed decision-making processes.

Highlighting such an extensive timeframe, hair follicle assessments serve as a reliable tool for verifying long-term abstinence or identifying ongoing issues, which are often overlooked by other testing methods with shorter detection periods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Tool, TX, the integrity of hair follicle testing is bolstered by its tamper-resistant nature. The method significantly curtails the risk of sample contamination, providing clear, unquestionable results. This reduces the instances of adulteration that are prevalent in other testing scenarios.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
