Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing in Tradewinds, Texas. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in this method, with test centers across all cities nationally. A typical requirement is having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown, although body hair might be used. Hair tests are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

Lately, drug testing methods increasingly employ hair follicle tests. Many companies, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer these over standard urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationers often choose hair tests for their extensive detection duration, reaching up to 90 days, collected via supervised processes, minimizing cheating. Yet, to assess recent 5-day drug use, urine tests remain highly precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a significant means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When gathered close to the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for identifying alcohol and drug use. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, approximately 200 strands, akin to the size of a #2 pencil, closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is advised to collect 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the beginning of a sample's system integration within a laboratory. This process verifies that the sample was both sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial quick evaluation for drugs of abuse. Screening is a budget-friendly strategy for negating drug use across most samples; however, a positive screen needs further validation for legal acceptability. Any samples suggesting a positive result during Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

If a sample suggests positivity during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Preparation in the Extraction step. Drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

The Confirmation of any positive screening results occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All ostensibly positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter period.
  • Difficulty in cheating: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical data: It provides drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically take around 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing alternatives.
  • Outcome variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often tagged as "hair follicle tests", the test targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
