Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Trammels, Texas. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this field with testing facilities Nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches from your crown or body can be analyzed for substances, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing options.

Recently, the use of hair follicle drug tests has become more common in drug testing processes. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair tests rather than conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations with zero-tolerance policies, judiciary systems, and probationary authorities. The chief advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, alongside an observed collection method, making it hard to manipulate. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing serves as a comprehensive tool. Through the entrapment of biomarkers within the fibers of an expanding hair strand, hair reveals an extended profile of alcohol and drug consumption. Sampling hair from near the scalp yields a detection timeframe stretching up to nearly three months for alcohol and other substances. The collection process of hair is straightforward, and despite being moderately challenging to tamper with, it remains easily transportable.

An ideal test sample is obtained from a 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hairs (a thickness comparable to that of a #2 pencil) cut closest to the scalp, weighing around 100mg. This sample is perfect for both screening and verification. For EtG enhancements or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Utilizing jeweler’s scales for precise measurement of the sample is suggested. In situations where scalp hair isn’t obtainable, a proportional amount of body hair can be utilized. The term head hair is specifically referring to scalp hair only, whereas body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The main phases in processing a laboratory drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is first logged into a laboratory’s framework, involving the validation of proper sealing and shipment of the sample, the generation of a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any other data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for detecting drug use. While it offers a cost-efficient way to exclude drug consumption for most samples, a favorable screen needs further confirmation to be accepted in legal proceedings. Samples indicating tentative positivity in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

For samples with initial positive indications during the Screening stage, additional hair from the same specimen is utilized for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other practices (like using urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Verification of any positive screening result is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Prior to confirmation, any presumptively positive samples undergo washing as needed. The end-to-end laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Reduced ability to manipulate: Given the difficulty in tampering with hair drug tests, results are rendered more reliable.
  • Chronological consumption data: This test can map out a drug use pattern over time, unlike methods charting only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to detect immediate usage: Approximately 5-7 days are required before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variance: Factors including hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites located in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", only the hair strand—and not the underlying hair follicle—is assessed during the test.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
