Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Travis Ranch, Texas. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair analysis, with testing facilities available across cities Nationwide. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body for testing, which can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other analyses.

In recent times, drug testing methods increasingly include hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists prefer hair drug testing to conventional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial entities, and probation programs utilize hair tests. The key advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended 90-day drug use detection timeline, conducted under observation, making it almost tamper-proof. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests still provide the best accuracy.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has evolved into a highly effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft, hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug consumption. When hairs are gathered near the scalp, they can reveal drug and alcohol use for a period of approximately 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, composed of around 200 hairs (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is best. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the hair sample. In cases where head hair isn't available, an equal volume of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically indicate scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The core stages in lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is where the sample first enters the lab system. This stage involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry needed beyond what's provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for abuse drugs. While this is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need secondary confirmation.

When a sample shows presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair, detected at levels much lower than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug testing among the most challenging processes to conduct.

Positive screening confirmation utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing as necessary before confirmation. The entire lab operation from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and is compliant with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Challenge to falsify: The difficulty in tampering with hair drug tests enhances the reliability of the results.
  • Historical usage insights: It offers insights into drug usage patterns over time, beyond immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Lack of recent use detection: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become visible in hair after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other drug testing technologies.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
