Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Trent, Texas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with facilities available Nationwide that are equipped to conduct hair tests. Typically, a hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body can be utilized for testing. Hair tests can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method in drug testing protocols. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations enforcing zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probationary programs due to their extensive detection window of up to 90 days, observed sample collection, and heightened security against tampering. However, for screening recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most effective solution.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive history by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When hairs are collected from near the scalp, the detection period extends up to nearly 3 months for drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A segment of 1.5 inches from about 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields approximately 100mg, the perfect sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG testing, auxiliary tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, using 150mg of the sample is advisable. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be taken. References to head hair specify scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to initially processing a sample into the lab's system. This covers checking that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick check for drug abuse. Although it is a cost-efficient way to negate drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be legally valid. Samples showing presumptive positive results at Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is sourced from the initial sample for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the toughest technique to carry out.

Any positive screening result is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter window.
  • Less vulnerability to cheating: It's particularly hard to deceive a hair drug test, thus enhancing result authenticity.
  • Tracks usage patterns: It accounts for drug use over time, offering more than just the record of recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Not detecting recent intake: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Outcome variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly mentioned as "hair follicle tests," the analysis concentrates on the hair strand, not the root under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Trent, TX
Hair follicle testing offers several advantages over traditional urine tests, primarily because of its extended detection window. While urine tests may only reveal drug use within a few days, hair tests can detect usage over a 90-day period, providing a comprehensive insight into an individual's history. This extended detection period is crucial for employers, especially those with strict anti-drug policies.

The accuracy and reliability of hair follicle tests make them a superior option. While urine samples can be easily adulterated or substituted, hair samples are collected in an observed process, reducing the risk of tampering. This ensures that hair testing produces results that are both consistent and credible, bolstering confidence in the test outcomes.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Trent, TX
Hair follicle testing is renowned for its extended detection capabilities, examining substance use across a 90-day span. Unlike urine tests, which are limited to detecting recent drug use, hair testing enables employers to view a comprehensive portrait of a candidate's or employee's drug history. This broader detection scope is invaluable for making well-informed decisions regarding employment and workplace safety.

In addition, the ability to track drug use over an extended period serves as a deterrence for continuous users and highlights those who may require assistance. Ensuring a drug-free workplace in Trent, TX becomes more straightforward with hair testing, as it effectively captures instances of regular or past substance use, helping employers maintain a secure environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Trent, TX
The secure nature of hair follicle testing significantly reduces the likelihood of sample adulteration. Unlike urine samples, which can be easily manipulated, hair samples are collected under supervision and are incredibly difficult to alter or replace, thus ensuring the authenticity of the sample and the reliability of the results.

For employers in Trent, TX, the ability to depend on unhindered results is crucial. The tamper-resistant traits of hair testing make it a key tool for obtaining accurate evaluations. This diminishes the risk of false results due to tampering, reinforcing employer confidence in the validity of the test outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
