Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Tulia, Texas. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide to conduct hair tests. Generally, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Over the years, drug testing methods increasingly include hair follicle exams. Many organizations, legal courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair testing over traditional urine testing. Businesses with no-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation employ hair tests. Key advantages include an extensive detection window of up to 90 days, observed collection, and resistance to tampering. For recent drug use, however, urine tests remain highly accurate for a five-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term repository for alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When sourced from near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Its collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, forming the ideal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg of the sample is advised. Measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key stages in the lab processing of a drug screening result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the primary intake of a sample into a lab’s framework. This involves confirming that the sample was securely sealed and dispatched accurately, designating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any data entry not catered to by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is an affordable method to negate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for court acceptability. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is collected from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a substantially lower concentration level compared to other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty in evasion: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly hard, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Historical data provision: It yields a timeline of drug usage over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Around 5-7 days are required for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair pigmentation and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
