Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Tuscola, Texas. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our specialization in hair testing ensures reliable results, with locations in cities across the nation for testing convenience. A hair sample from the head or body measuring 1.5 to 2 inches is typically adequate. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG or offer other tailored hair testing options.

In recent years, drug testing practices have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are mandated by organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies and are favored by courts and probation officers. Their principal advantage lies in an extended detection window for drugs' presence, generally up to 90 days, with samples collected using a supervised process that is hard to falsify. Nonetheless, for detecting usage within the prior 5 days, urine tests maintain the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective technique for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged account of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the hair's fibers as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month period of alcohol and drug usage. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A cutting of 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (similar to the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp results in approximately 100mg, which is the optimum amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and screenings above 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample's weight. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent portion of body hair can be utilized. "Head hair" specifically means scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other varieties of hair (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Summary

The testing laboratory follows four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially logged into the lab's system. This step includes confirming that the sample was securely sealed and properly dispatched, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs a preliminary examination for drug presence. Though Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug use in the majority of cases, a positive result from Screening must be validated to be valid in legal settings. Any samples flagged as potentially positive in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

For samples marked as potentially positive during Screening, further hair is retrieved from the initial sample and set for Extraction. Extraction involves isolating drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to methods like urine or oral fluid analysis, which makes hair drug screenings notably challenging.

Confirmation of positive Screening outcomes is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples identified as potentially positive undergo a cleansing process before confirmation. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the process undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detectability: Hair drug screenings can ascertain drug intake for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Offers usage history: It can indicate a drug usage pattern over time, not just recent intake.

Drawbacks:

  • Can't identify recent intake: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings typically cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Caution: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis pertains to the hair strand and not the follicle below the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing is preferred over urine tests due to its superior detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests, hair testing showcases its reliability in identifying drug use through a more extensive analysis window. This makes it a favored choice among organizations enforcing stringent drug policies. The high accuracy level makes it nearly impossible to tamper with results, ensuring reliable and credible findings.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing provides a significant advantage for employers seeking a comprehensive view of an individual's substance usage history. By detecting drugs up to 90 days prior, this method enables a fuller understanding of an applicant or employee’s habits, aiding in making informed hiring and management decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

With a significantly reduced risk of sample tampering, hair follicle testing stands out as a trustworthy testing method. The integrity of results provided by this process is unmatched, ensuring that samples remain unadulterated and results are unquestionable. This security enhances the overall reliability of drug testing outcomes, ensuring peace of mind for employers.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
