Accredited Drug Testing in Tuxedo, Texas provides extensive hair follicle drug screening. When in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing stands as a leader in this service, with testing facilities nationwide ready to offer these tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on your head or body is typically required. Hair testing can evaluate for substances, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing arrangements.

In recent times, drug testing methodologies have increasingly included hair follicle analysis. Many employers, legal systems, and substance misuse experts now prefer hair tests over conventional urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are employed by zero-tolerance organizations, legal entities, and probation programs. Key advantages of hair follicle testing are extended detection windows (up to 90 days), observation collection, and strong tamper resistance. Urine tests still remain precise for detecting recent use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analyzation is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. This method provides an extensive history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the hair shaft. Samples taken near the scalp can reveal substance use history going back as much as three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easily transported.

An ideal sample consists of 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands, akin to the width of a #2 pencil, near the scalp weighing 100mg, suitable for both initial and confirmatory tests. For tests such as EtG, specialty panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale to measure the sample weight is suggested. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. Here, 'head hair' strictly means 'scalp hair.' 'Body hair' encompasses other types (i.e., facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of drug tests involves four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to initially entering the sample into the lab's system, ensuring the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any data entry not covered by electronic tracking.

Screening performs an initial assessment for substance presence cost-effectively, able to dismiss non-positive samples. Presumptive positives necessitate further verification for legal acceptability. Secondary confirmation is required for any positive screening.

During Extraction, when a sample is presumed positive, more hair is taken from the collected sample and readied. Drugs are extracted at a lower concentration from hair than with other testing types (e.g., urine or saliva), which makes hair drug analysis notably challenging.

Confirmation of positive results utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing ahead of confirmation. The lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the criteria of both the CAP Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug tests:

  • Extended detection period: Capable of identifying drug usage up to 90 days out, offering a longer detection timeframe than urine tests.
  • Resistant to deception: Its hard-to-tamper nature renders hair tests highly reliable.
  • Shows usage trends: Captures a history of substance use, rather than merely recent usage.

Challenges:

  • Delayed detection of recent intake: Drugs become noticeable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Higher costs: Hair drug tests generally incur greater expenses compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Influences such as hair color and unique growth factors can impact drug concentration readings.

Note: Despite commonly being termed "hair follicle tests," this testing actually examines the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

    Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
