Located in Tye, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug evaluations. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our specialization in hair testing spans nationwide with centers ready for testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is sufficient for analysis. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made testing needs.

Increasingly, drug testing procedures favor hair follicle examinations over traditional means. Agencies, employers, and substance professionals are opting for hair drug testing over urine tests. Employers enforcing no-drug use standards, legal entities, and probation officers utilize these tests. A key advantage is the extended detection range of up to 90 days, with supervised sample collection making tampering improbable. Still, urine tests are optimal for detecting usage within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record for alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When collected from near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over a duration of roughly three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG assessments, additional evaluations, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to determine the specimen's weight. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be taken. References to head hair specifically concern scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This process includes ensuring the sample's proper seal and shipment, generating a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any supplementary data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary examination for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for courtroom acceptance. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening require a subsequent verification.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. At this point, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is notoriously challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed as required prior to confirmation. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: It's extremely challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, yielding more reliable outcomes.
  • Records historical usage: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drug presence in hair becomes detectable roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing forms.
  • Results variability: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Tye, TX reveals superior detection capabilities. Hair testing surpasses urine testing through its precise accuracy, detecting drug use over a prolonged period and making it virtually tamper-proof. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
