Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Universal City, Texas. If your need involves a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with facilities available in cities nationwide to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair are required. Hair exams can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific needs.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle examinations. More employers, judicial systems, and professionals in substance abuse now mandate hair tests over traditional urine ones. Hair follicle tests appeal to employers with strict no-drug policies, legal bodies, and probation officers. These tests offer a significant advantage with their extended detection window of up to 90 days, observed sample collection, and the near impossibility of tampering. Nevertheless, for identifying drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a potent method for assessing drug and alcohol consumption. The presence of drugs and alcohol can be traced over an extended period by capturing specific biomarkers within the hair's growing strand fibers. When strands are gathered near the scalp, they can offer a detection period of roughly three months for both alcohol and other substances. Collection of hair is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section, comprising around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) nearest the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, an optimal amount for both initial screening and subsequent confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to use a jeweler's scale for specimen measurement. If scalp hair is unattainable, a comparable amount of body hair can be taken. "Head hair" specifically refers to hair from the scalp, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Synopsis

The testing process in the lab includes four principal phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary stage where a sample is integrated into a lab's system. This step confirms the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any extra data entry requirements excluded from an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening is the phase where an initial assessment for drugs is conducted. Though Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug presence in most samples, any positive result requires confirmation to be valid legally. Samples that test positive at this stage need additional confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the primary specimen for Extraction. This phase involves separating drugs from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or saliva), which makes hair drug testing one of the most challenging methods to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive Screening result is executed using methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test positive preliminarily are washed ahead of confirmation if necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation requirements of ISO/IEC 17025.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, which is longer than urine-based tests.
  • Higher reliability: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Usage pattern data: Offers insights into drug usage trends over time, beyond immediate usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Delay in detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Higher costs: Typically, hair drug tests are pricier compared to alternative testing options.
  • Result inconsistencies: The drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair shaft and not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing provides a superior alternative to traditional urine tests in Universal City, TX. The detection period with hair tests far exceeds the timeframe offered by urine tests, capturing a longer history of drug use. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
