In Valera, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. If you require a hair or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers across all U.S. cities ready to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. The tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific hair testing requirements.

Over the years, hair follicle tests have increasingly been used for drug screenings. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals lean towards hair tests instead of the usual urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probation clients often prefer this method. Its main advantage is the longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it hard to manipulate. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Through capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers a comprehensive overview of alcohol and drug usage over time. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 90-day detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is effortless to collect, presents a challenge to tamper with, and is simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, deemed the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (like facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary integration of a sample into the lab’s system, ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any leftover data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening serves as a cost-efficient means to clear most samples of drug use, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation to be court-acceptable. Presumptively positive samples at the Screening stage require additional verification.

If a sample appears presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives receive a wash before confirmation if needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair directive and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, leading to more accurate results.
  • Provides historical data: It can map out drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can alter the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
