In Valley Spring, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in this form of testing and have facilities nationwide ready to conduct the test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. These tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals often prefer these tests over urine samples. Hair tests are favored by organizations with strict no-drug policies and those on probation. A key advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days. Despite its advantages, urine tests remain more accurate for very recent drug use within the past few days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent instrument for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand, offering a comprehensive timeline of drug and alcohol usage. If collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for various substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and is conveniently shippable.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional testing, or panels surpassing 10, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be collected. "Head hair" pertains specifically to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The essential laboratory processes for drug test result determination encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing phase where the sample is introduced into the laboratory's system. This stage verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data input that isn't covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a swift preliminary inspection for drug abuse. Screening serves as an economical means to eliminate drug use in most samples, but a positive screen warrants confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples that indicate presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample appear presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug testing the most complex methodology to undertake.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash prior to confirmation if required. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the entire laboratory process is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, offering a wider detection period than urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: The testing method's resistance to manipulation ensures greater result accuracy.
  • History tracking: Hair analysis can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, surpassing mere recent usage detection.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variances: Elements such as hair color and individual growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
