Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Valley View, Texas. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty hair testing services are available in testing centers across all cities Nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored hair testing options.

Over the past years, the approach to drug testing has increasingly integrated hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer these over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are often required by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation programs. The key advantage is their ability to trace drug use for up to 90 days, under monitored collection, making them nearly cheat-proof. However, for identifying drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have gained reputation as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The strands offer an extended timeline of drug and alcohol ingestion by capturing biomarkers within the developing fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair tests can detect substances for up to about three months. Hair is easy to gather, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal quantity for both initial screening and validation. For EtG, supplementary evaluations, and assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable amount of hair from other body areas can be obtained. In the context of head hair, we are solely discussing scalp hair. Body hair denotes any other hair type (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the lab processing of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial admittance of a sample into a laboratory setup. This stage verifies proper sealing and shipping of the specimen, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and encompasses any auxiliary data recording not covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening provides a preliminary examination for signs of drug abuse. Though Screening is a budget-friendly approach to dismiss drug usage for the bulk of samples, a confirmed screen is necessary for the results to stand in court. Samples that yield a presumptive positive from Screening will require further confirmation.

For samples yielding a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and set for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a considerably lower concentration than alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening a challenging procedure to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening outcome, executed by GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS, is carried out subsequently. All samples signaling presumptive positive outcomes undergo cleansing prior to confirmation if required. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes assessment under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair distinction and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug use spanning up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which have a limited detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug evaluation is considerably challenging, thereby enhancing the reliability of the outcomes.
  • Historical usage pattern: It delivers a timeline of drug usage over an interval, rather than solely pinpointing recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: It takes nearly 5-7 days for substances to become discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations typically incur greater costs than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair pigment and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While often denoted as "hair follicle tests," the procedure actually assesses the hair strand itself, rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
