Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Van Vleck, Texas. If you need a hair-based test for drugs or alcohol, we are specialists in this area, with testing centers in every city across the nation. To perform a hair test, you typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body areas. This method can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for various testing needs.

In recent times, the hair follicle drug test method has become more common for conducting drug tests. Many businesses, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair tests over the standard urine tests. These tests are chosen by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and those monitoring individuals on probation. The main advantage is the longer detection period of up to 90 days, collected under observation, and almost impossible to fool. Meanwhile, urine tests remain more precise for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a long-term profile of drugs and alcohol by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the extending hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection timeframe for drugs and alcohol. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to mail.

A 1.5-inch section containing around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, optional additions, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. In the context of head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, among others).

Process Overview

The four key phases in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the primary processing of a specimen entering a laboratory’s system. This phase involves checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. Despite being a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Presumptively positive Screening samples necessitate further confirmation.

If the Screening phase results are presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this stage, substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which positions hair drug screening as the most challenging method to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS tools conduct the Confirmation of any positive screening outcome. All presumptive positive specimens undergo a washing process before Confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Testing integrity: It is challenging to compromise a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Misses recent use: Drugs are detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug residues in hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the scalp-embedded hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
